Richmond is in the centre of the Coal River Valley, a rich agricultural area with many vineyards. The town is a beautifully preserved heritage town, with Australia's oldest bridge and functional churches.

Richmond Gaol pre-dates the penal settlement at Port Arthur.

Richmond is very picturesque, with ducks swimming in the river, a village green and many interesting shops.
